Almost half of all Year 12 students regularly smoke cannabis, a new report has found. And cannabis users are 2.3 times more likely to drop out of school and only half as likely to enter university. A study by the National
Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, for the NSW Education Department, surveyed more than 50,000 students around Australia. The report found children who post poor results in early school years are at higher risk of turning to
cannabis later in life. It has recommended offering extra support to primary school children struggling with literacy and numeracy in a bid to break the negative cycle of cannabis dependency. The report "Educational Outcomes and Adolescent Cannabis Use" will be distributed to all government schools from this week.
