Australia: SA man, 70, grew cannabis to relieve pain
9 News Wednesday 16 Oct 2013 Describing the case as "rather unusual", Judge Wayne Chivell said William Derek Phillips produced the cannabis in his shed which had a sophisticated hydroponic set-up. Phillips, 70, pleaded guilty in the South Australian District Court to cultivating a commercial quantity of a controlled drug, which attracts a maximum penalty of $200,000 or 25 years in jail or both. The septuagenarian, from Adelaide's Happy Valley, also admitted possessing prescribed equipment and trafficking in a commercial supply of a controlled drug. In July last year, police found him tending an irrigation system in the purpose-built growing room inside the shed, where mature cannabis plants were growing under lights. They also found three plastic bags containing 26 kilos of wet cannabis heads, which weighed 4.6 kilos when dried, and 23 immature plants. Describing himself as being "riddled with arthritis", Phillips said he began using cannabis to deal with his chronic pain and if there was any left he would sell it to friends at the pub. "The trouble with growing this much cannabis is that it is usually associated with organised crime, and that's why the penalties are so high," the judge said on Tuesday. But he accepted that selling the drug was not the main aim of the venture and noted Phillips - who had no criminal record - said he no longer used cannabis and would not reoffend. He imposed a two year three month jail term which he suspended, placing Phillips on a three-year good behaviour bond. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/2013/10/16/12/57/sa-man-70-grew-cannabis-to-relieve-pain
