UK: We're weeding the garden: 500,000 now grow cannabis at home Jaymi McCann, Conor Woodman Daily Star Monday 14 Oct 2013 “If you have nine plants or less in your house you won’t get a prison sentence – but you can still make £40,000 a year.” A new documentary has revealed ordinary people from pensioners to students are getting involved. Cannabis production used to be concentrated in large buildings in remote areas but the industry has moved to people's homes. Filmmaker Conor Woodman told The Sun: “If you have nine plants or less in your house you won’t get a prison sentence – but you can still make £40,000 a year. “One single mum told me her bedroom tax pales into insignificance compared to what she makes from the cannabis in her spare room.” The ITV show found that 80% of cannabis consumed in the UK is home grown and it has become a multi-million pound business. It is thought that some start growing for personal consumption and side into commercial cultivation. But perhaps more worryingly, it was revealed that many are coerced into growing cannabis by other criminals. Sergeant Paul Court from the cannabis dismantling team of Merseyside Police told ITV: “There are some people who are growing cannabis, who are doing it because they are being pressurised. "And initially where they may have thought they could either get away with it or they could put up with the pressure, it’s got to a point where actually the level of criminality they have now been asked to become involved with has become too much. Experts warn that the increase has put growers at risk as they have become targets. Conor Woodman added: “I interviewed a man who stole plants. He bragged about torturing his victims.” The thief described how he would use hammers to beat victims up and make them give away their stock. Exposure: Britain’s Booming Cannabis Business will air on ITV1 on Wednesday. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/344963/We-re-weeding-the-garden-500-000-now-grow-cannabis-at-home
