India: Cannabis stash 'for Hindu ceremony'

MSN

Tuesday 22 Oct 2013

An estimated $40,000 worth of cannabis was intended to be burned as part of a Hindu ceremony rather than being sold, an English couple accused of drug dealing have claimed.

Katarzyna Dryden-Chouen and her husband Clive said they planned to burn the marijuana they had grown in a small pit as part of a spiritual healing ritual to the god Shiva, the Gloucester Citizen reports.

But prosecutors have argued the couple intended to sell the drugs, also charging them with laundering nearly half a million dollars.

Mrs Dryden-Chouen kept a meticulous diary detailing the cultivation of her crops, watering and feeding.

"We give thanks to Shiva. Last crop was 2kg 29oz, this crop 4kg – Yeah!" she wrote.

She also argued that 1844 diazepam pills found in her home were for personal use.

The couple have pleaded not guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply, possession of cash in criminal property and money laundering.

Mr Dryden-Chouen's son Ashley Chouings also faces possession and money laundering charges.

The trial continues.
