UK: TV spotlight on shock rise in cannabis use in East Midlands

Nottingham Post

Monday 28 Oct 2013

CANNABIS use has doubled in the East Midlands over the past six years, according to the latest figures.

Research by the National Drugs Treatment Monitoring Agency revealed use of the drug in the region has risen more quickly than in the rest of the country between 2006 and 2012.

BBC show Inside Out is looking into the issue tonight and is talking to experts who think the message of links between the drug and mental health is not being heard.

Nottingham students Jacob, 20, and Jackson, 18, spoke to Inside Out about their regular use of 'skunk' – a strong form of cannabis.

Jackson said: "It's so easy to get hold of, you can get some in 15 minutes flat."

Professor Sir Robin Murray, who is from the Institute of Psychiatry, attended a conference at Nottingham Trent University, where he said youngsters smoking 'skunk' daily are damaging their ability to learn.

He said: "Education is needed on different types of cannabis and then you would see a difference."

BBC Inside Out East Midlands goes out on BBC One tonight at 7.30pm.
