A Katikati man has been sentenced to six months home detention and ordered to complete 150 hours community service for selling cannabis.

Phillip Terangi was sentenced in Tauranga District Court today after earlier pleading guilty to one charge of selling cannabis to a person over 18, possession of cannabis for supply, and possession of equipment.

Phillip Terangi campaigns to legalise cannabis outside Tauranga District Court.

According to court documents, police found 22 tinnies in Terangi’s Katikati home during a search on July 5 this year.

Police also found a plastic bag containing $255 cash, as well as three spotting knives and two spotting spoons used to smoke cannabis.

Terangi’s sentence included other conditions. He is not to use alcohol or drugs and will be subject to breath and urine tests. He will also be required to attend an alcohol and drug assessment.

Terangi had previously complained of a back problem saying he was unfit for community service, but Judge Peter Rollo disagreed saying there was no medical reason he could not work.

Judge Rollo suggested that mowing lawns at a local marae or urupa could help Terangi become more involved in the community.

Judge Rollo says Terangi has “significant cannabis issues,” and has eight prior convictions for the drug.

In October Terangi participated in a pro-cannabis protest outside court seeking legalisation of the drug for health reasons.
