US: Sean Azzariti, Iraq war vet, first to legally buy pot

Colorado became the first state in the nation where adults of age can buy recreational marijuana, and the first man to make a pot purchase tweeted about the honor.

Sean Azzariti is an Iraq war veteran who has been an activist for the legalization of weed, saying marijuana helps alleviate his symptoms from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to multiple news outlets. His purchase was staged by activists as a ceremonial first buy for the media.

As the clock struck 8 a.m., when stores opened and began selling recreational marijuana, Azzariti spent $59.74 at Denver’s 3D Cannabis store. He bought an eighth of an ounce of “Bubba Kush” and a marijuana-laced truffle.

Media reports from Colorado showed long lines at various dispensaries in the state as locals and some out-of-towners took advantage of the state law legalizing recreational use of the drug. Some enthusiasts began lining up outside stores before dawn.

The law requires users to be 21 years of age or older to buy the drug and does not allow public use of marijuana.
