Malaysia: Nigerian gets 10 years’ jail, 10 strokes for cannabis possesion Nurbaiti Hamdan The Star, Malaysia Wednesday 15 Jan 2014 Steven Okechukwa, 31, and Sunayani (female), 39, earlier faced the death sentence when they were accused of trafficking 851.12g of cannabis at an apartment in Bandar Puteri on June 7, 2010. Both pleaded not guilty to trafficking. Okechukwa, however, admitted to an alternative charge of possession on the said drugs Wednesday, while Sunayani's representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers was accepted. High Court judge Justice Abdul Alim Abdullah then sentenced Okechukwa and ordered for Sunayani's discharge and acquittal. "Today, you are off the hook. Take care of yourself and change your lifestyle. God is great and fair, think about what you want to do (next time). I hereby acquit you of the (trafficking) charge," he said to Sunayani, who was sobbing from the dock. According to the statement of facts, the police knocked on the apartment’s door during a raid. Sunayani answered the door. The police found Okechukwa in the living room in a suspicious manner. Upon seeing the rush, Okechukwa, who was holding a bag containing cannabis, threw the bag out of the window. The police then detained Okechukwa and confiscated the bag downstairs. DPP Iskandar Shah Ibrahim prosecuted. Lawyers Sangeet Kaur Deo and S. Selvi represented Okechukwa and Sunayani respectively. http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2014/01/15/Court-Nigerian-drugs/
