Spain: The Medical Cannabis Bike Tour: Activism with a Twist

365 kilometers of Mediterranean coastline separates the small Castellón town of Onda and Barcelona, one of Spain's largest and most famous cities. In traveling between the two, you are deeply immersed in the land of paella, Gaudí, and a culture famous for its warmth and diversity.

This is the route that over 40 cyclists will take this spring in the hopes of spreading awareness about one of the most controversial plants in the world: cannabis. March 2014 will be the third year of the Medical Cannabis Bike Tour, an effort lead by Luc Krol, founder of Amsterdam-based Paradise Seeds, to gain publicity for medical cannabis and raise funds for research on cannabinoids and cancer.

Last year, the tour raised a whopping 50,000 euro for research efforts led by Doctors Manuel Guzmán and Guillermo Velasco of the Complutense University of Madrid. Both doctors are responsible for a wave of extremely influential discoveries on the effect of cannabis on tumor cells. In their research thus far, the professors have found that cannabis causes tumor cells of certain types of cancers to auto-digest, a revolutionary finding in the realm of cannabinoid science.

This year, Krol hopes to double his funding, with a goal of rasing 100,000 euro through sponsorships and donations.

In an effort to support medical cannabis and further research on the plant we’ve all come to love, Leafly is proud to both sponsor this year’s tour as well as participate in the event. Two Leafly team members will be completing the near 230 mile journey by bike March 11th through 13th to play our part in advancing cannabinoid medicine.

The tour ends in Barcelona at Spannabis, one of the largest cannabis festivals in the world, which both of our riders will attend.

“I am really excited to ride in the tour,” says Rebecca Kelley, editor of Leafly’s News and Culture section and our Content and Community Manager. “This is a great opportunity to show the world that medical cannabis is legitimate and should be explored as a viable treatment for diseases like cancer. This tour is also a fantastic way to show that cannabis consumers can be athletes. Stereotypes about marijuana lovers mean that athletes who partake tend to face a lot of flack by mainstream audiences. I'm so happy that canna-activism is really branching out with active, creative efforts like this one.”

Throughout the tour and Spannabis, the Leafly duo will be posting daily to our News and Culture section, giving you an insider’s peek into Spain’s rich cannabis culture and trends. If you are interested in learning more about the Medical Cannabis Bike Tour or donating to the cause, you can find more information on the Tour website here. We look forward to your support!
