UK: War on drugs in Cambridge will 'never go away', police chief warns CHRIS HAVERGAL Cambridge News Monday 10 Mar 2014 Sgt Jim Stevenson, the area’s top officer, said 17 people were currently on bail after being arrested by his team in the last three months but that this would not stamp out the trade. In the last quarter, officers executed eight drugs warrants in the south and east of the city, resulting in a number of arrests – including seven people who were detained on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs – and the seizure of class A and B drugs. On top of this, 35 people have been stopped under stop and search legislation, resulting in two arrests for possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, and cannabis seizures from five people. Sgt Stevenson told the south area committee most of the dealers were being sent from London and that, while his officers were getting “very proficient” at spotting traffickers, this would not end the matter. He said: “When we deal with them, we will then deal with the people sent to replace them. To some extent the problem is never going to go away.” Among the dealers locked up recently was Matthew Aboderin, of Croydon Road, London, who got a four-and-a-half year sentence after being caught with heroin and crack cocaine hidden between his buttocks. Sgt Stevenson said: “Most of the people who come to Cambridge are running organised criminal businesses. “They are not users themselves, they are preying on a quite large section of poor and vulnerable people in our communities. “They make use of a lot of class A drug users in a particularly exploitative way and, to some extent, I like to think a lot of our work is protecting unfortunate members of society, to get them into treatment or away from the people who exploit them.” Councillors voted to maintain tackling drug dealing as a priority for officers. They also approved clampdowns on burglary in Cherry Hinton and thefts from builders’ vans in Trumpington. http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Cambridge/War-on-drugs-in-Cambridge-will-never-go-away-police-chief-warns-20140310061500.htm#ixzz2vbtKT7wW
