UK: Jersey minister starts law review into cannabis licence

A review into whether cannabis could be licensed for medicinal use is being carried out by law officers in Jersey.

Health Minister Deputy Anne Pryke, confirmed the review after a question from Deputy Montfort Tadier in the States on Tuesday.

There is provision in the misuse of drugs law for someone to apply for a licence from the health minister.

Deputy Pryke said the review was prompted after someone, who has not been named, applied for a licence.

Under the law a person may, with approval from the health minister, cultivate cannabis plants.

The licence could also allow them to produce, supply, offer to supply and possess the Class B drug.

Deputy Pryke said: "I can confirm that the department has been approached by an individual inquiring whether it would be possible for cannabis to be imported for medicinal use."

She said it was not clear if this was possible.

"Until I get advice from the law officers and from the misuse of drugs advisory council it is not appropriate to make any comment on that," she added.
