UK: Further Attempts To Open First Legal Cannabis Coffeeshop In UK

Green Party councillor, Ian Driver, is attempting to open Britain’s first legal cannabis café in the Thanet district of Kent. He is attempting to open an Amsterdam-style coffeeshop where, although the drug would still technically be illegal, the premises would be granted a special dispensation by the local authorities and would therefore be a safe, social place to smoke weed. The sale of cannabis would still be prohibited under this proposal.

Driver says “It makes eminent sense to have a nice relaxing atmosphere where cannabis users, for recreational or medicinal purposes, can get together and enjoy themselves just as other people go out for a drink.”

He continues “We are going to talk to the police and ask them to be tolerant of the café.” Driver recently told the BBC that the people of Thanet are almost entirely supportive of his proposal.

However, Kent police are not supportive – “Our role is to enforce the law which states that cannabis is a Class B controlled drug and possession is an offence which carries a maximum five-year prison term…The use of any premises for any drug-related activity, which would include the use of cannabis, is an offence punishable by imprisonment of up to 14 years with an unlimited fine.”

Nevertheless, Driver believes Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg’s argument for alternatives to a complete ban on all drugs supports his position on the opening of a coffeeshop in the UK.

Plans for the proposal will be discussed at a public meeting at the Red Hall, 11 Grosvenor Road, Broadstairs, between 1pm and 3pm today.
