Canada: Calgarians smoke marijuana at city hall to call for legalization of the drug

Amid clouds of pot smoke, dozens of pro-marijuana dissidents rallied at city hall Sunday for U.S.-style legalization.

Two police officers briefly waded into the crowd and eight of them watched from a distance as some toked up and listened to activist Keith Fagan condemn prohibition.

“People have lost their homes, their kids because of prohibition, mostly in the States,” said Fagan, with 4-20 Calgary.

But he said Ottawa’s attempts to crack down on individual medicinal pot growers flies in the face of outright marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington state.

“We’re still looking at caveman ways,” he said as about 120 people gathered.

Clad in a leafy cannabis outfit, Lona Bronee said Canada looks out-of-step.

“With Americans legalizing it, we look like such losers,” she said.

She cited federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s vow to liberalize pot laws.

“Vote Liberal, kids have got to start voting because he’s all we’ve got,” said Bronee.

Ottawa is appealing a federal court decision blocking its bid to prevent individual medicinal marijuana users from growing their own, limiting access to larger, licensed cultivators.

Fagan said he didn’t agree with ralliers toking up publicly, and when cops moved in to break up the event, he urged them to “quit smoking your joints” and disperse.

There were no arrests.

A larger rally was also held at the provincial Legislature building in Edmonton, along with several cities across the country.
