US: Letter: Marijuana's benefits cannot be ignored

I felt a need to address the gross misconceptions in David Spaulding’s letter on April 26, and other letters I have seen the past few weeks concerning the subject of legalizing marijuana.

First, there are no studies that show that marijuana is a “gateway drug.” As a matter of fact, studies have found that nicotine, alcohol, and even caffeine are more addictive than marijuana.

We should also look at the number of deaths caused by marijuana, which would be zero. Compare that with the legal drugs of alcohol (almost two million alcohol-related deaths in the world last year alone), and nicotine (almost 500,000 in the U.S. in 2013).

Mr. Spaulding also talks about decriminalizing an illegal substance. If you know your U.S. history, alcohol was once considered an illegal substance, but that was decriminalized in the 1930s.

In addition, Mr. Spaulding has failed to mention the medical benefits of marijuana:

• It can stop HIV from spreading;

• It slows the progression of Alzheimers;

• It slows the spread of cancer cells

• It is an active pain reliever

• It combats depression, anxiety and ADHD

I think we should weigh the benefits of marijuana before condemning the drug. There are much worse legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol, that cause much worse damage than marijuana.
