US: Cannabis march draws hundreds

Let my people grow: that’s one of the slogans chanted at Portland’s marijuana legalization march and rally Saturday at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Portland is one of 300 cities in America to host the fifteenth annual Global Cannabis March, in a push to legalize the drug.

Voters signed petitions for three measures event organizers hope will appear on the November ballot.

The event, sponsored by Oregon NORML, KBOO Community Radio and Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp (CRRH), drew hundreds.

All measures would legalize marijuana for recreational use — similar to current laws in Colorado and Washington. However, one issue in those state is the price of legal cannabis compared to more traditional (less legal) markets.

“All we want is freedom and sensible regulation.said medical marijuana law expert and Oregon NORML spokesperson Paul Loney.

“What we’ll do is to make cannabis much less expensive.

‘We’ll design the price structure to wipe out the black market, so our initiative is written specifically to avoid those kinds of pitfalls that they’re experiencing in Washington and Colorado.”

Oregon voted against legalizing marijuana in 2012.
