Alan Barrie Mason was charged with unlawful production of cannabis, possession and possession with intent to supply after a police raid on his home in Stonegarth, Morton. Mason, 40, is due before Carlisle Crown Court on October 16 when he will use the new Human Rights Act to rebut the charge. He said: "I am not and never have been a criminal. I wish no harm on society or any member of it. Cannabis has been of such benefit to me that it is a necessity of my life. "For over 70 years the public has been misled about this wonderful plant, which can do so much to help mankind in so many ways." The Human Rights Act became law this week. It enshrines the European Convention on Human Rights in English law, and should end the need for litigants to take their case to the European Court in Strasbourg. Mason is citing Article Nine of the Convention, which asserts the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
