Australia: Widespread support among Daily Telegraph readers for Dan Haslan’s use of marijuana for pain relief

Ashlee Mullany

Daily Telegraph

Tuesday 13 May 2014

A TERMINALLY ill Tamworth man who admits to smoking marijuana to quell the nausea of chemotherapy has received an outpouring of support from members of the public.

Dan Haslan breaks the law every week by smoking marijuana and taking cannabis oil.

He not only has the approval of his father, an ex-drug squad detective, but also has the blessings of his town’s top cop.

After sharing his story on Sunday, almost all readers surveyed by The Daily Telegraph backed the 24-year-old’s plea to legalise medicinal marijuana.

A poll of almost 2400 readers found 94 per cent wanted the drug legalised for medicinal purposes, with only 2 per cent against the idea.

Ana Kitson, a mother of four with terminal cancer, said she too had broken the law to “have some quality of life with my children.”

“All I suggest is research it, then get behind this as it could be you, your child or someone else you love,” she commented.

Karen Chard said: “Good on you. Unless these people have ever walked in your shoes they will never know and it’s a naturally grown plant and if helps you with your pain etc then go for it.”

Diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2010, the fortnightly chemo that keeps Mr Haslan alive used to make him so violently ill he would have to be hospitalised for hydration.

Late last year Mr Haslan’s mother Lucy sourced illegally grown cannabis for her son as research shows it quells nausea.

“I haven’t been violently ill since I started on it, that alone is enough for me, from spending a night in hospital and losing five kilos every fortnight to not vomiting and being able to eat,” Mr Haslan said.

Lucy Haslan said the drug’s effect is miraculous.

“He comes home after chemo, has a few drags and then comes in and has something to eat,” Ms Haslan said.

“To see this is nothing short of miraculous. He has not vomited since he has been having the cannabis after chemotherapy,” she said.

Everything we are doing is illegal,” Mr Haslan’s wife Alyce said.

“But we have the support of the police, the support of the community and we are doing criminal activities because this is life or death.”

The pair, who were childhood sweethearts, married last year despite his grim prognosis.

Mr Haslan yesterday thanked the community and asked his supporters to sign his petition at www.dansstory.com.au

For heavenssake if cannabis is going to ease the nasty side effects of Chemotherapy then Ibelieve it should be available to Cancer Patients. Next time Police find astash somewhere, don't burn it , make it available to the patients.
