Cannabis energy output has successfully been boosted to form a substitute and alternative to olive oil and rapeseed oil. Hemp oil has similar fatty acids and the new oil is said to be ‘an attractive cooking oil similar to olive oil but with a much longer shelf life and greater heat tolerance’ which could potentially mean more industrial applications.

Scientists have used a ‘fast-track molecular plant breed’ to select a plant which was lacking in the active enzyme which created a breed with less poly-unsaturated fatty acids and instead accumulated higher levels of the mono-unsaturated oleic acid.

Professor Ian Graham, from the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products, said: “The new line represents a major improvement in hemp as an oil crop. Similar developments in soybean and oilseed rape have opened up new markets for these crops, due to the perceived healthiness and increased stability of their oil.”
