New study shows no link between cannabis and psychosis Ben Morris Digital Journal Thursday 05 Jun 2014 After four years of research, a team at the University of Calgary, published the findings of a study conducted on 170 individuals which concluded cannabis does not contribute to psychosis in users of the drug. http://www.hightimes.com/read/study-alcohol-linked-psychosis-not-marijuana Researchers followed the brain activity of alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis users, and found, "Results revealed that low use of alcohol, but neither cannabis use nor tobacco use at baseline, contributed to the prediction of psychosis in the CHR (clinical high risk) sample." The study contradicts findings reported in a different study back in 2012. The journal Archives of General Psychiatry, argued the main component in cannabis, THC can induce systems of psychosis in otherwise healthy people, while worsening the conditions of others who already experience cases of psychosis. The study backs up the claim by the National Institutes of Health, who say, "there is good evidence to support," the link between "cannabis use (that) can cause acute adverse mental effects that mimic psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder." However, to further back up the findings of the University of Calgary, a study from last year showed cannabis as a promising treatment for psychotic diseases. Researchers from Europe found, "evidence from several study domains suggests that CBD has some potential as an antipsychotic treatment." In the conclusion of the report, the researchers suggested the cannabinoid CBD, "may prove to be an attractive alternative to current antipsychotic treatment." The University of Calgary study adds evidence to curtail the prohibitionist argument that cannabis causes brain malfunction. Like a Harvard study concluded previously, cannabis does not cause schizophrenia.Like the conclusions made by the Harvard researchers, doctors who have studied the causes of psychotic disorders, have been unable to confirm the exact causes of psychosis, but the general belief links the cause of psychotic disorders with, "inherited genetic factors and external environmental factors." http://www.digitaljournal.com/life/health/new-study-shows-no-link-between-cannabis-and-psychosis/article/385784
