They judged that Mrs Gibson had reason to believe not taking cannabis would cause death or serious injury. The jury may not have knowen that the Government is already committed to large scale clinical trials for cannabis. Changes in the law must follow if it can be shown that the drug is the most suitable medication for treating Multiple sclerosis. Any new law must make absolutly clear that cannabis will be available only on prescription for specific medical uses. Cumbrias chief constable Collin Phillips is on record as saying this approach would be " wholly sensible " if the current research shows there is a medical benefit. Meanwhile, however, the law allows police raids and prosecutions against MS sufferers to continue. Mrs Gibson found compassion in the shape of a Cumbrian jury; we just hope the prosecuting authorites have got the message when it comes to dealing with other people in her desperate position.
