Sri Lanka Navy arrests 13 Indian fishermen
Colombo Page Thursday 17 Jul 2014 The Tamil Nadu fishermen from Ramanathapuram have been arrested off Thalaimannar in the north western coast along with their three mechanized boats. Indian media reported that according to Indian Fisheries department sources, fishermen in more than 500 mechanized boats ventured into the sea and the Sri Lankan navy personnel, who arrived at the spot, surrounded some of the boats and chased them away from the Sri Lankan waters. Fishermen sources have said that the Sri Lankan Navy had detained 36 fishermen of Pudukkottai and Rameswaram along with their boats and later released the 23 fishermen from Pudukkottai men along with their five boats after conducting an inquiry with them and detained the 13 from Rameswaram along with their three boats. The arrested fishermen have been handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Thalaimannar for further investigations. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday detained three country boat fishermen of Dhanushkodi for allegedly possessing 72 kg of ganja cannabis (Kerala Ganja) in the seas west of Delft.
