US: I'm proof medical marijuana works Irvin Rosenfeld Sun-Sentinel Sunday 20 Jul 2014 Enrolled as a patient in the federal government's "Compassionate Investigational New Drug Program" in 1982, I am the longest surviving federal medical cannabis patient in the United States. The federal government has been supplying me with 10 medical cannabis cigarettes per day for over 30 years, and I would not be here today if it wasn't for my medicine. My condition became debilitating when I was just 13 years old. I have painful tumors that grow throughout my body and tear through my muscles and veins. I've have had several operations and have been prescribed several medications, including narcotics, over the years. After a 10-year fight, I won the ability to legally use medical marijuana as medicine under the federal government. For me, medical marijuana has acted as a muscle relaxant, an anti-inflammatory, and a painkiller. It has also slowed the growth of my tumors. Sadly, many others who could benefit from medical marijuana live in states where it's criminalized. Many Floridians who need this medicine don't want to leave our state to get it. This is our home. We love the beaches, the weather, and the lifestyle. Fortunately, Florida will have the opportunity to change this in the fall. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/opinion/fl-oped-medical-marijuana-20140720,0,4266847.story
