US: Decriminalize transport of cannabis oil across state lines
Daily Herald Sunday 20 Jul 2014 An exception must be made to federal law to allow families to carry non-intoxicating, seizure-stopping cannabis oil across state lines. A law signed by Gov. Gary Herbert in March makes use of the oil legal, but getting the marijuana plant extract across state lines from Colorado, where it is manufactured, to Utah remains a federal offense. We applaud the way this law came about. It started as a grassroots effort among families with children suffering from epilepsy, and quickly made its way through the state legislature earlier this year. It saw little resistance because of the overwhelming evidence that cannabis oil has healing principles with minor side effects. Rep. Gage Froerer, R-Huntsville, was one of the major driving forces behind the legislation, which went into effect July 1. "I think it was a concerted education effort by a number of people that made it possible in the time frame it happened," Froerer said. "The moms that had these children suffering from epilepsy were a huge component because they could tell their story better than anyone else." The effort to approve the bill allowing cannabis oil as a treatment for epilepsy required a great amount of buy-in among legislators, law enforcement and the medical community. Educating the experts came, again, from the ground up. We are impressed with that kind of effort and the response by state legislators to listen to the families of those most impacted by epilepsy. More than anything we are impressed with the trust legislators had in the process. "The state of Utah is willing to trust the parents of this state in making the decisions they feel are right for their children’s health," Froerer said recently. We’ll admit it is somewhat odd to think a state as conservative as Utah would have anything to do with medical use of the marijuana plant, but this is not medical marijuana we are talking about. And, we are not endorsing medical marijuana. The federal government needs to take Utah’s lead and also become educated about the benefits of cannabis oil as a treatment for epilepsy. We urge lawmakers on a national level to take up this effort now and decriminalize the transportation of cannabis oil across state lines. http://www.heraldextra.com/news/opinion/editorial/decriminalize-transport-of-cannabis-oil-across-state-lines/article_cdbe9437-5741-53f0-9547-47886809fcc5.html
