UK Jersey: Islander's campaign for cannabis-based drug Leah Ferguson Channelonline.tv Thursday 24 Jul 2014 Sativex is a newly-licensed medicine which helps ease chronic conditions that cause muscle spasms. But it is not available on the public health service in Jersey or Guernsey, and both governments say they won't prescribe it for free. That's despite the MS Society UK claiming there is stark evidence the drug is life-changing for patients. Ann Hill says the drugs will make a huge difference to her condition. She told ITV News it is “totally unfair” that some people can afford to buy it and others cannot. Because it's derived from cannabis, Ann worries it's too controversial for the health department to dish out. Deputy Montfort Tadier has backed her campaign and has asked the States to take the necessary steps to make Sativex more widely available in Jersey. Guernsey’s Prescribing Officer Geraldine O’Riordan said: “It's perfectly understandable that people with chronic illnesses are interested in new treatments, that's human nature, but equally we've got to look at the safety aspect of it as healthcare professionals and the cost.” http://www.channelonline.tv/channelonline_jerseynews/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=512086
