New Zealand is being urged to follow Norfolk Island's example in setting up a medicinal marijuana industry.

The island has granted a Tasmanian company a license to import, export and grow medical cannabis products.

Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party leader Julian Crawford says it's a game-changing decision.

"Their economy has been struggling from the global financial crisis so I think it's a win-win for the patients and the economy."

Mr Crawford says the decision makes sound economic sense.

Norfolk Island is part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
