Norfolk Island is issuing licences for the cultivation of medicinal marijuana.

Tasmanian company Tasman Health Cannabinoids has been granted permission to import, export and grow cannabis for medical purposes.

The island's Health Minister Robin Adams says it's a great opportunity for the economy of Norfolk Island, and provides a much needed medical product.

She says the island's highly dependent on tourism, and has suffered during the economic recession.

It's thought Cannabinoid Pharmaceuticals NZ will also be applying for a licence.
