Canada: Marc Emery to return home next week after 4 years in U.S. jail

After weeks of waiting at a deportation center in Louisiana, Marc Emery will be returning home to Canada next week, after spending more than four years in American jail.
For Canadian marijuana activists, Marc Emery is a martyr, a man who temporarily lost his freedom with an act of civil disobedience. Now, he is returning home.
Speaking to Jeremiah Vandermeer of Cannabis Culture (a magazine founded by Emery), Canada’s Prince of Pot stated he is, "anxious to get involved," with the Liberal Party to push for marijuana to be legalized in Canada with a Liberal victory in the next federal election.
Speaking to CBC News, Emery passionately expressed his desire to flex political muscle by promising to "wreak an appropriate amount of political revenge," for the extradition approved by Justice Minister Robert Nicholson in 2010. When Emery was arrested, a memo from the DEA signed by administrator Karen Tandy read, "Today’s DEA arrest of Marc Scott Emery, publisher of Cannabis Culture Magazine, and the founder of a marijuana legalization group — is a significant blow not only to the marijuana trafficking trade in the U.S. and Canada, but also to the marijuana legalization movement." Emery’s release comes at an exciting time for legalization advocates in Canada.

Last summer, after winning the Liberal leadership, Justin Trudeau called for the legalization of marijuana at a rally in B.C, and Canadians seem to support Trudeau’s stance. According to a recent Ipsos Reid poll, a majority of Canadians want marijuana sentencing to be reduced, a third want complete legalization. His former employee Dana Larson, a marijuana advocate from B.C told the Globe and Mail, “Marc’s life work has been dedicated to this cause and we are really anxious to get him back on Canadian soil to continue the fight.”
Emery, wrote his final blog before he was transferred to the deportation facility in Louisiana, where he expressed excitement about his pending release. He will spend a short time in Windsor before heading to Toronto to celebrate his release at Vapor Central, before heading back to his home in Vancouver, where he will walk back through the doors of Cannabis Culture magazine.
Dates and locations for the rallies have not yet been released.
