Australia: Police drug raid on Nimbin café, bookshop

Police have arrested eight people and seized two kilograms of marijuana and other drugs after Oasis Cafe and Perceptio bookshop were raided, in what they are describing as ‘an ongoing drug operation in the Nimbin area’.

A spokesperson for Nimbin Hemp Embassy told Echonetdaily that approximately 30 uniformed and 10 undercover police, together with police dogs, took part in the operation this morning.

‘They tested people at random and later raided both the bookshop and the café where drugs were apparently being sold,’ he said.

The swoop is part of an attempt by police attached to the Richmond Local Area Command to target local marijuana sales since March, which they have dubbed ‘Operation Oleary’.

A police media spokesperson said that ‘as a result of extensive inquiries, investigating officers today moved into the arrest phase of the operation; with assistance from 70 police from the Northern and Western regions, as well as officers from specialist commands.’

So far eight people have been arrested in the Nimbin area.

It’s alleged these people have been involved in the ongoing supply of drugs; including marijuana, LSD, MDMA and prescription medication.

Police will also allege the two businesses raided were selling prohibited drugs from the stores.

‘The operation remains ongoing, with a simultaneous drug dog operation targeting the entire township,’ the spokesperson said.

‘A third search warrant is being executed at a residential address in Jiggi, where police have allegedly located a large amount of mature cannabis plants.

Richmond Local Area Commander Superintendent Greg Martin said today’s arrests ‘have dismantled a criminal group we allege was responsible for supplying significant amounts of drugs throughout the Nimbin area.

‘I’m aware of the reputation this area has had for a number of years, in regard to drug use and supply,’ Superintendent Martin said.

‘Concerns from members of the community have triggered today’s action, and the results should demonstrate that we are committed to working on this issue.

‘Those charged with ongoing drug supply face up to 25 years jail. We will continue to target drug offenders and treat them with the seriousness they deserve,’ he said.

Police say the raids will continue and that further seizures and arrests are expected.
