Italy: Almost a quarter of Italian students smoke cannabis: parliamentary report

Global Post

Monday 15 Sep 2014

A parliamentary report on drug dependency released on Monday showed that almost a quarter of Italian students aged between 15 and 18 have smoked cannabis cigarettes.

Around 23.5 percent of questioned students said they had smoked cannabis over the past 12 months compared with 21.6 percent interviewed last year.

The report said the use of cocaine by the students declined, while the use of heroin and hallucinogenic drugs was stable.

"Emptiness is at the roots of this increasing trend," Lorenzo Papagna, the head of a non profit organization which helps people addicted to drugs and runs prevention campaigns, Lenad Cop, told Xinhua.

"Over the past 20 years our society has enriched with technological instruments that should have helped development, but ended up spreading models which promise big results without efforts," he noted.

"Surrounded by reference values which are exclusively material, youngsters have lost curiosity and passion," Papagna highlighted.

According to the expert, investing time and resources firstly on the education of families and secondly on the school system can tackle, though not heal, the increase of drug addiction.
