Fast-growing pot farms force police to smoke out marijuana joints by asking locals to take a whiff, but note the cards are not laced with actual drugs.

Does your neighbor pass the smell test?

That's what police in Northern Ireland are asking with a campaign to familiarize the public with marijuana's smell and its tell-tale signs.

In an attempt to nip pot factories in the bud, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has begun handing out "scratch and sniff" cards Thursday, which detail how to spot a cannabis operation — along with its scent.

The scratch and sniff portion of the card offers this reassurance: "Scratch here. It's completely safe; there are no drugs in the card, it's just the smell of the plant."

Pot production in Northern Ireland is on the rise after police raided 130 grow houses between April 2013 and March, police said.

"The Scratch and Sniff initiative is a novel approach to a growing problem in our society," Justice Minister David Ford said. "The new cards will enable members of the community to help tackle the drug problem in our society, by identifying criminal activity either near their own homes or in the areas where they work."

The cards also ask locals to look for other signs, including: A strong and sickly sweet smell; Covered or blocked off windows; Visitors at unsociable hours.
