Australia: Smoke-in planned for Nimbin police station

Echo.net.au

Tuesday 07 Oct 2014

A group of Nimbin residents plan to converge on the local police station on Saturday to demand an end to the ‘aggressive’ police raids on the village.

Outraged by recent police attention on the village, the Nimbin Action Group has called on the community to join in the non-violent protest.

Organiser Sophia Hoeben said the community had had enough.

‘We will be calling upon both federal and state governments to implement cannabis law reform and stop the overkill of police laying siege on our small village,’ she said.

‘Shopkeepers, locals and tourists alike are united in their outrage at the frequency of these aggressive raids and the resulting financial impact on Nimbin shops and services.’

Ms Hoeben said protesters would gather in Cullen Street, Nimbin, at 12 noon on Saturday.

They will then march to the Nimbin police station for a protest smoke-in.

‘Shops in Nimbin will be asked to close at midday for 10 minutes as a show of solidarity,’ she said.

It’s not the first time a smoke-in has been staged at the police station.

Back in March 1993, Nimbin residents marched on the Nimbin police station after undercover police officers were discovered buying cannabis in the area.

This enraged many to such an extent that they chased the police officers back to the police station and pelted them with eggs.

Concerned about bad publicity some of the townsfolk decided to come up with a more peaceful form of protest that ordinary people could comfortably join.

A few months later, the original Plantem, Bob Hopkins, led another contingent of townsfolk to the police station.

Dressed as a nun, Mr Hopkins presented himself at the front door of the police station smoking what he ‘believed to be’ a joint of marijuana.

He was duly arrested, but the action planted the seed for the annual Mardi Grass pot protest gathering.
