Hungary mayor calling for annual drug test for teens

Annual drug tests should be mandatory for teenagers, as well as politicians and journalists, a top member of Hungary's ruling party Fidesz has said.

"Those most at risk (from drugs), decision-makers and opinion-formers, should all be regularly checked for drug use," Fidesz communications chief Mate Kocsis, 33, said on social media, local news websites reported Saturday.

Kocsis, who is also a mayor, said 12-18 year-olds, politicians and journalists were among those who should face such annual tests.

He added that he would propose for his party to draft a law on the issue and bring it to parliament for a vote.

Kocsis, mayor of Budapest's tough 8th district, shut down a local needle exchange service for drug addicts earlier this year. — AFP
