French Newspaper Announces Support For Cannabis Legalization

Le Monde, a well-known French newspaper, released an editorial article today in support of the legalization of cannabis in France. This move appears to follow a new trend of newspapers throwing their support behind cannabis legalization and decriminalization and using their widespread influence to get the message out – recent examples include The New York Times and The Oregonian.

France has one of the highest rates of cannabis use in Europe (along with canna-friendly Denmark), with more than 13.4 million French residents admitting to trying cannabis at least once. Between the ages of 15 and 34, an estimated 43% of the French population use cannabis on a regular or semi-regular basis.

This announcement comes right on the heels of a recent cannabis development in France – the ministry of health recently approved Sativex, a cannabis-based mouth spray containing THC and CBD. It will be strictly controlled and is mainly used to prevent spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis.
