Sri Lanka police arrest over 46,000 suspects in last two years for drug trafficking

Sri Lanka police during the last two years had arrested over 46,000 suspects in connection with heroin trafficking.

The Police had arrested 23,610 suspects and seized 350 kilograms of heroin in 2013 and in 2014 arrested 23,100 suspects seizing 312 kilograms of heroin, the Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said at a press briefing Tuesday.

The 662 kg of heroin seized during the last two years are worth Rs. 6.662 billion, according to SSP Rohana.

He noted that the highest number of arrests of drug traffickers in Sri Lanka happened in 2013 and most of the heroin had been smuggled in from Pakistan.

The spokesman said many of the local drug smugglers have escaped overseas and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) had issued Interpol red notices on ten of them.

The Red notices have been issued on Sinniah Gunasekaran, Sunil Gamini, Joseph Canute Siripalan Peiris, Nivumas Subaj, Lal Pieris, Pradeep Nadun, Prasanna Janaka, Sujith Nishantha, Mohammed Siddeek, and Samantha Kumara alias 'Wele Suda'.

The PNB has taken steps to confiscate the property of four of the major drug traffickers - 'Wele Suda, Wasantha Mendis, Don Amarasiri and Vidura Soyza as soon as possible. Similarly, an active investigation is underway in regards to the properties of the other major drug traffickers and that soon all of their property will be confiscated, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the police had seized 102 metric tons of cannabis during the last two years and 85,494 people had been arrested in connection with the drug.
