UK: DRUG-DRIVING LAWS COMING IN TO FORCE
Plymouth Herald Monday 09 Feb 2015 There will also be a new campaign to make drivers aware of the new limits which will be targeted at young male drivers who are the most at risk from this type of illegal driving. Men aged 17 to 34 are the most likely group of drivers to take drugs and drive. Figures from the Department of Transport show that 85 per cent of collisions where drug-driving was cited as a contributory factor involved males. The figures also show that 63 per cent of 16- to 59-year-olds who report the use of illicit drugs in the last year were aged between 16 and 34. Some prescribed medicines will also be included in the new legislation, though the law will not apply if the medication is being taken as directed by a doctor. The new legislation is aimed at making it easier for the police to deal with drug-driving, and offenders can face a 12-month driving ban, a fine of up to £5,000 and a criminal record. There are eight specific illegal drugs included in the new law, with the most common drugs being cannabis, cocaine and amphetamines. http://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/DRUG-DRIVING-LAWS-COMING-FORCE/story-25998053-detail/story.html
