Zambia: Man gets 10 years for marijuana CHRISTINE CHIHAME Zambia Daily Mail Wednesday 04 Mar 2015 In this case, Genius Makofi of house number B117 pleaded guilty to trafficking in a psychotropic substance. Makofi on October 17 last year in Chililabombwe, trafficked in 587grammes of marijuana, a herbal product of cannabis sativa without lawful authority. In mitigation through legal aid counsel Mweendalubi Kapukutula, Makofi begged for leniency because he is youthful and capable of reforming. “My lord, the convict has been in incarceration from October 17, 2014 and the time in prison has given him an opportunity to reflect on his life. Despite being a second offender and the circumstances of the charge, he readily admitted the charge and did not waste the court’s time. “I pray that the court exercises leniency on him as he is remorseful of his actions,” Mr Kapukutula said. But High Court judge Isaac Kamwendo observed that Makofi is a second offender. “I sentence you to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour,” Mr Justice Kamwendo said. Facts before the court were that on the fateful day, Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officer Benson Muleya was on duty when he received information that Makofi was dealing in marijuana. The court heard that Mr Muleya in the company of other DEC officers went to search Makofi’s house and found suspected marijuana. The suspected marijuana was taken to the Food and Drugs Control laboratory in Lusaka where it was confirmed to be marijuana weighing 587 grammes and Makofi was arrested https://www.daily-mail.co.zm/?p=22298
