UK NI: General election: All the candidates
News Letter Monday 13 Apr 2015 All of those standing on May 7 had to register by last Thursday, and the total number of candidates for this year is 138. Compared to 2010, voters are somewhat spoiled for choice, with 30 more contenders running in this election than in the previous one. As well as the better-established parties, there are also a sprinkling of more left-field figures – including four from a recently-formed party called Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol, which campaigns for the liberalisation of drug laws. It costs £500 apiece to stand for election, and candidates will lose this deposit unless they can poll one-twentieth of the vote – meaning some are likely to be left with both dashed hopes and lighter wallets once the votes are tallied. There is still time to register to vote – but the clock is ticking. The deadline is Monday, April 20. It involves completing a form and sending it – along with a number of identification documents – to your local Electoral Office. http://www.newsletter.co.uk/news/regional/general-election-all-the-candidates-1-6687101
