Smokers have 4/20 reasons to celebrate

The de facto cannabis holiday 4/20 had stoners around the world Monday smoking and celebrating the popular green leaf.

At 4:20 p.m. on Monday, and throughout the day, pot smokers united to celebrate the annual organic holiday.

The spot to be in Pueblo was The Spot, a recreational marijuana shop in Pueblo West.

Customers lined up to purchase cannabis products and to celebrate the day.

“We’ve had a steady stream of people here since last Thursday. About 500 people a day since Thursday,” said Robert Lucero, owner of the 20,000-square-foot facility.

“It’s crazy. I thought it would be a little slower today, but I was wrong.”

The Spot celebrated 4/20 over the weekend with local bands and entertainment.

On Monday, “Boston Dave” of Pueblo was playing guitar and singing as pot enthusiasts crowded the lobby.

“We figured we’d finish up with something mellow,” said Rick “Vegas” Hooper, general manager.

“This day is becoming more widespread now. People are coming in from everywhere.”

The Spot was not only celebrating 4/20, but also the year anniversary of the shop’s new name.

“I heard customers saying, ‘Wow this is the spot.’ So it stuck. We changed the name a year ago from Nature’s Remedy (Wellness Center). Our customers named it,” Lucero said.

Hooper said 4/20 will live on.

“It’s going to be a national holiday, one day. I feel confident in that,” he said shaking his fist.

“It’s big. Denver’s got its own scene and Pueblo has its own scene down here. It started with us and it will continue here.”

Hooper said The Spot is planning a larger 4/20 event next year on 10 acres of land the company purchased this year across Industrial Boulevard from where The Spot is located.

“It will get bigger and bigger. We are really excited. The industry is on the move,” Hooper said.

Lucero said plans to refurbish the shop’s growing facilities are in the final stages and the new digs will be operational in the next few weeks.

The new plans include open tours where the public can walk through corridors and see the grow process behind glass windows. A bilingual tour guide has been hired.

The facility will have five state-of-the-art, clean grow rooms visible to tourists.

“We are going to make it a destination place where people can tour and see what they are getting,” Lucero said.

“We are thinking outside of the box. We want to create an experience for people who come here. This is the future of the cannabis. You can’t get any more cleaner of an environment.”
