UK: Devon Cannabis Club to smoke openly in park protest today

North Devon Journal

Saturday 25 Apr 2015

PEOPLE who smoke cannabis are set to gather in a Devon park today to openly smoke to Class B drug during a protest.

A total of 88 people have signed up on Facebook for the Devon Cannabis Club at Flowerpot Playing Fields in Exeter.

The protest will take place between 1pm and 6pm.

Last year around 60 people took part in a similar event at Flowerpot Fields.

Supt Keith Perkin of Exeter Police said: "We have worked closely with the organisers. They are aware that we will deal with misuse of cannabis as we would in everyday circumstances which could lead to a penalty notice, or even arrest. We have been assured by the organisers they will not break the law. Anyone attending the event could be liable for police enforcement action.

"We have also put in place a dispersal order which will allow police to direct people to leave the area if alarm or distress were being caused to the local community."

Although there was a strong police presence in the park there were no arrests.

Police had pledged to monitor the event and said that while anyone smoking cannabis would be breaking the law, they recognised the right to peaceful protest.

And police confirmed that the protest passed without incident and no arrests were made.
