GREENVILLE, S.C. - For the dozens of people who gathered in downtown Greenville Saturday, the battle is personal.

For April Pace, legalizing medical marijuana is about giving her daughter life. Dixie, who's 18 years old, went from averaging 50 seizures a day and barely able to speak, to now some days, she has no seizures at all.

"Immediately after her first dose, she was speaking plainer," said April. "All of that put together was just amazing."

They shared Dixie's story at a medical marijuana rally in downtown Greenville. Using the slogan, Yeah THAT Cure, organizers are hoping to appeal to lawmakers.

The SC General Assembly passed a medical marijuana law last year, allowing certain people to use CBD oil made from the cannabis plant. It can reduce or even eliminate seizures for people with severe epilepsy.

Rally organizer Emily McSherry says they're pushing to expand the use of medical marijuana beyond that.

"We also know that preliminary research shows that THC also can help people with other systems. It can help with other disorders and diseases," said McSherry. "And so our goal is to promote the awareness of whole plant therapy and to be able to provide access to whole plant therapy for patients throughout South Carolina."

But the issue is controversial.

The State Law Enforcement Division and the SC Medical Association both oppose legalizing medical marijuana. SLED says the illegal market would grow because it can be disguised as legal. The medical association says it could lead to recreational users trying to get prescriptions from doctors.

As someone with epilepsy herself, McSherry says the benefits are too good to ignore, especially for her 8 year old daughter.

"My daughter has witnessed numerous seizures," said McSherry. "And not only is it frightening for me as a parent, but extremely frightening for her as a child."

The Paces say, it has finally given them hope.

"I didn't realize how little we had until we finally found some," said April.

The state legislature is considering a bill to expand the use of medical marijuana in South Carolina.

McSherry says she plans to speak to lawmakers when the bill comes up in committee later this month.
