Germans take to the streets to demand decriminalization of marijuana
dpa-international Monday 04 May 2015 In the south-west of the country, the three largest demonstrations were in Stuttgart and the ancient university towns of Heidelberg and Tuebingen, but police figures revealed Sunday placed turnout much lower than organizers had expected. In Heidelberg, 500 demonstrators were expected, but police said only 250 turned up; in Stuttgart, 900 people had signed up to attend on a Facebook page, but only 400 made it out of their front doors, according to police estimates; and in Tuebingen, police counted only 40 participants. The first Global Marijuana March took place in the United States in 1999. Organizers say marches now take places in hundreds of cities worldwide. The only political party to call for the decriminalization of the drug is the Greens, with the youth wing of the party vocal advocates at the weekend's marches. Wearing T-shirts with the legends "Regulation not Criminalization," demonstrators marched through the town and city centres to call for the legal consumption of marijuana. "We have posters, banners and a truck with a loudspeaker," a spokesman for the Rhine-Neckar region Cannabis Association said. Police confiscated a box of edible cannabis seeds, which were due to be handed out in front of Stuttgart City Hall. A police spokesman said they were investigating whether this constituted a violation of the country's drug laws. Further demonstrations are planned for the cities of Mannheim and Ulm on Saturday. The Cannabis Association claims that 4,000 people took part in last year's Global Marijuana March, with the largest being in Ulm. The march is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May, but as this fell so close to the May Day holiday this year, some cities decided to hold their events on the second Saturday. http://www.dpa-international.com/news/international/germans-take-to-the-streets-to-demand-decriminalization-of-marijuana-a-45130087.html
