Seattle: Hundreds march in 'Shell No' rally

Citizen Side

Monday 18 May 2015

Hundreds marched on the Port of Seattle on May 18, 2015 to protest a Shell Oil drilling rig parked on the waterfront.

The drill, named the Polar Pioneer (pictured at a distance in the fifth image), is intended for use this summer in drilling off the northwest coast of Alaska. Some fear the risk of oil spilling into the Arctic Ocean.

Protests ramped up shortly after the drill arrived on May 14, with activists in kayaks — now referred to as "kayaktivists" — there to greet the Polar Pioneer. A larger, similar protest was held over the weekend, dubbed the "Paddle in Seattle."
