UK: Pot wins prizes
BBC News Monday 28 Sep 1998 Judges in Glastonbury, Somerset, had awarded hemp shop In Harmony With Nature first prize in the first-time entry category for a selection of tubs and hanging baskets on display outside the store in July. But police swooped last month to remove 13 cannabis plants from the display and arrested the shop's manager, Free Rob Cannabis, on suspicion of cultivating an illegal drug. Mr Cannabis, 31, who changed his name as part of his campaign to legalise the drug, was released on bail while police forensic experts analysed the plants. Sowing the seeds The hemp expert, who was presented with his award on Saturday, said: "I did not sow the hemp seeds, I thought that would be a bit much as I was going to enter the Glastonbury in Bloom competition. "But other people do scatter the seeds around and cannabis plants are often seen growing in the town's flower tubs. "But watering the plants is seen as cultivating them, so I was arrested." 'Private display' He added: "The main issue here is that this is a plant that we have been using in a variety of ways for thousands of years." Mr Cannabis said he had only planted lavender, heather and roses. Mendip district councillor Alan Gloak, the chairman of the Glastonbury in Bloom competition, said: "We judged this display in July on what was growing there then. "People do scatter these seeds around Glastonbury quite often. Where we see them in council displays we remove them, but these were in a private display." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/179470.stm
