UK: Smokey Bear’s Picnic event ‘is not encouraging smoking’: Organiser doubts police will be heavy-handed

Wednesday 27 May 2015

AN ORGANISER of a cannabis picnic has said people are not being encouraged to smoke the drug.

Eric Head, from Smokey Bear’s Picnic, said it is a decision for individuals.

Smokey Bear’s Picnic is set to return on July 11 at Southsea Common, in Southsea, after an awareness picnic was held last summer.

Mr Head said: ‘Smokey Bear’s Picnic is not encouraging people to smoke on the day or in general – that decision is for the individual.

‘Smokey Bear’s does encourage that the individual should be free to make an educated choice without criminality or fear of that criminality.

‘Smokey Bear’s Picnic is confident there will not be any heavy-handed police action with the picnickers in 2015 as times and attitudes and budgets have changed.’

It comes as Hampshire Cannabis Community also hopes to put on an event at Castle Field on August 16.

The two events are not being run by the same people.

Hampshire Constabulary has said it will police the event and crack down on drug use.

Portsmouth City Council said the groups need to apply for permission to hold an event on the land but have not done so as of last week.

Cannabis is a class B drug and it is illegal to possess it.
