US: Texas Legalizes Cannabis Oil for Medical Purposes

Monday 01 Jun 2015

Cannabis oil is now legal for medical purposes in Texas but not everyone can use it.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 339 into law on Monday. That law gives people with intractable epilepsy or “IE” the chance to get cannabis oil to treat seizures.

The law only applies to those who are proven to have IE. Health officials said people with the disease can have 100 seizures per week.

The state will regulate and distribute the oils to patients whose symptoms haven’t responded to federally approved medication.

Cannabis oil comes from marijuana plants and helps control seizures but doesn’t produce a high.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will have to license at least three dispensing organizations by September 2017. Only a neurologist or epileptologist will be able to prescribe the oil.

Abbott’s signing makes Texas the 15th state to allow for limited medical use of marijuana-derived oil. Twenty three other states have adopted broader laws making cannabis legal for medical purposes. Only four states allow the recreational use of the drug.

The law in Texas will go into effect in September.

Governor Abbott said Texas won’t legalize marijuana for medicinal or recreational use.
