UK: Hundred arrests in drug-drive clampdown

SOUTH Yorkshire Police caught 100 drug drivers in the first 117 days of new laws being brought in.

New legislation introduced in March means being over a prescribed limit carries the same penalties as drink-driving.

Officers had carried out 179 roadside tests when the arrests landmark was reached.

Cannabis was detected 69 times, cocaine appeared 21 times and both were present in ten cases.

Chief Insp Glen Suttenwood hailed his roads policing team’s efforts and said: “This is a landmark achievement.

“It’s alarming how many people think that they are able to drive with illegal substances in their systems.

“Drugs severely impair your ability to drive and anyone who gets behind the wheel under the influence is putting not only their own lives at risk, but the lives of any passengers and those in the community.

“We will not tolerate such disregard for other people’s safety and will continue to do everything we can to tackle the issue of drug-driving.”
