UK: Kent Police says NO to 'turning a blind eye' to cannabis

Maidstone and Medway News

Wednesday 22 Jul 2015

KENT Police says it is determined to continue its crackdown on cannabis-related crime despite forces across the UK easing their approach to the controversial drug.

According to the law, anyone in the possession of cannabis, classified as a Class B drug, could face up to five years in prison abd an unlimited fine.

But this piece of legislation has seen some police forces taking a more lenient approach to drug use.

In 2001 police in Lambeth, south London, trialled a scheme where people caught smoking the drug simply had it confiscated and received a warning.

And this week Durham Constabulary declared users and those who grow the drug for their own consumption will no longer be targeted by the police, saying it was not a priority.

In a move seen as a further step towards decriminalisation, Durham Constabulary declared it would only go after people using the drug if there was a complaint or if they were being "blatant".

Details of the policy were outlined by Durham's police commissioner Ron Hogg, who said he hoped setting out the position would spark a national debate around drug laws.

But his counterpart in Kent, Ann Barnes, says she will not be following suit: "As Kent's Police and Crime Commissioner my job is to ensure Kent Police enforces the law set by Government."

Similarly, a spokesman for the force said: "Kent Police will continue to deal with offences that involve cannabis, and all other illegal substances. Any changes in the law would be a matter for Government."
