UK: Petition to legalise cannabis in UK approaches 50,000 signatures

South Wales Evening Post

Friday 24 Jul 2015

Campaigners for the legalisation of marijuana are celebrating after they secured nearly 50,000 petition signatures.

The petition has already secured enough signatures to force the Government to give a public response and once it reaches 100,000, the Government will be obliged to grant time for a Parliamentary debate.

Earlier this week Durham's police and crime commissioner said that officers in the county will no longer prosecute cannabis users who grow the drug for their own consumption.

New figures released today from the Office for National Statistics revealed that around 6.7 per cent of adults smoked cannabis last year.

Cannabis was classified as a "class C" drug until 2009, but was then reclassified to "class B" amid fears that powerful new strains were dangerous to mental health.

Currently UK residents could face maximum sentence of 14 years in prison for supply or production of the drug.

In the Netherlands smoking cannabis is legal, given that it is smoked within the designated 'smoking areas' and you don't possess more than 5 grams for personal use.

It is also legal to sell the substance, but only in specified coffee shops.

In the US, Alaska, Oregon, Colorado and Washington have all legalised recreational use of cannabis along with Washington DC.

In addition more than 20 others allow the use of pot for medicinal purposes.

In 2001, Portugal became the first country in the world to decriminalize the use of all drugs, and started treating drug users as sick people, instead of criminals.

However, you can still be arrested or assigned mandatory rehab if you are caught several times in possession of drugs
