US: More Americans admit trying pot

In comparison, a separate question in the poll found that 19% of respondents smoke cigarettes.

To get a better sense of who is toking up, the Gallup researchers combined data from polls conducted in both 2013 and 2015.

“National polls have shown majority support for legalization for a few years now”, wrote Tom Angell, the chairman of Marijuana Majority, a pro-legalization advocacy group, in an email, “but this survey of voters in a key primary election state should be of particular interest to presidential candidates who are looking for issues that appeal to large constituencies”.

Have you ever toked up?

Pollsters concluded that the rise in self-reported marijuana use is likely to be because views on marijuana nationwide have relaxed, and adults are more likely to admit to having smoked marijuana in the past then they once were. Similarly, those who have no religious affiliation are much more likely to say they smoke marijuana (18%) than adults who identify themselves as Catholic (6%) or Protestant (5%).

Men are more than twice as likely as women to say they smoke pot (13 percent compared to 6 percent), the researchers found. And almost half of all men surveyed said they had tried pot, whereas only 35 percent of women admitted to experimenting with cannabis. This group was also the least likely to say that they now smoke pot (a mere 3 percent said they do). On the other hand and as far as the Federal Government was concerned the said plant in question was illegal. In even more states, marijuana has been decriminalized or permitted for medical use. The disclosure comes at a time when there is an overwhelming push by many states to have Marijuana legalization and implementation of the Marijuana program. The stigma associated with smoking marijuana appears to be loosening, and Americans may be less shy about revealing their experiences or habits than they have been in the past.

Gallup also found that 11 percent of Americans say they now smoke pot, while 88 percent say they do not.

Gallup conducted the poll among 1,009 adults between July 8-12. Only 7 percent of respondents admitted to toking up back in 2013 (though that slight increase in percentage points is within the poll’s margin of error, as indicated by the researchers).
