Owners of marijuana dispensaries in southwest Washington are waiting to see the long-term impact that Oregon’s legalization of recreational marijuana sales has on business.

Houlihan said the first day alone pulled in $3.5 million in sales.

All recreational sales in Oregon are tax-free until January, when a 25 percent tax will be added to help fund schools and various state programs.

Oregon sales easily outpaced the first week of sales in Colorado and Washington. In its first month, Washington sold $2 million.

According to a report a year ago in the American Journal of Public Health, suicide rates in males between the ages of 20 and 39 are reduced in states where medical marijuana has been legalized.

Houlihan said one reason Oregon fared better was because it has fewer restrictions on retailer, processor and grower participation.

“It’s exciting”, a customer named Peter told KGW. Marijuana Politics points out that sales may drop off a little when sales taxes kick in next year and after the newness of legal recreational marijuana wears off. However, sales may be bolstered by new marijuana products hitting Oregon’s pot market later in 2016.

A few of those customers are breaking stereotypes of the typical cannabis user.
